About Moore and Moore Cafe: Simon’s the chef and manager and cushion fluffer and furniture buffer and man about moore and moore. The good people at the City of Freo agreed that the man was The Man For The Job of doing something cool in this ancient pile of rocks and contemp art. And so he is. And inside-inside the cafe you get moore and moore art: the Gallery is always showing young and up-to-the-minute artists’ works of all styles from paintings and drawings to junk installations and video. And that guy or girl sitting lounging on the other lounge is possibly the artist in residence in the studio out the back. Ask Simon or his mates. Maybe the artist is happy to be distracted from the arduous task of creation to allow you to see the works in progress, chat about it all and buy them a coffee and cake. Or lunch. Artists like to eat occasionally.
The Moores Building, home of moore and moore, has a bit of a history, like its denizens. Mr Bill Dalgety Moore ran his ‘general merchant’ business out of it, starting in 1868, back when dinosaurs roamed Earth. It was something of a mosh pit, with a family cottage, then a ‘town house’, stables, warehouse, factory and offices. Bill and family lived and did business on site. The nice face was stuck on in the gold rush of 1899. You’re a history buff? Want to know more? Check out http://www.fremantle.wa.gov.au/things2c/html/moores_building.cfm . About Moores Art Gallery: The Gallery is one of Western Australia’s most innovative and exciting venues for contemporary art. Nearly everyone and anything has exhibited in one or more of its wierd and wonderful, cranky and creaky spaces because these spaces have a feel unlike any other in Western Australia. The Gallery curates a program of exhibitions and events and takes applications from artists year round. If you want to find out what’s happening or how to have a show in the convivial and cool spaces, email our mate Richie Kuhaupt, Exhibitions Officer, City of Freo, at richiek@fremantle.wa.gov.au , and see http://www.fremantle.wa.gov.au/things2c/html/moores_art_gallery.cfm .
